Maintain Good Oral Hygiene To Have Healthy Teeth

Oral hygiene refers to the practice of keeping one’s mouth clean and free of diseases and other problems like bad breath by regular brushing and cleaning in between the teeth. Even brushing your teeth every morning and night doesn’t guarantee a decay free teeth. It is the proper brushing technique and tools that ensures in helping you  pursue cavity free teeth. Hence the brushing techniques and tools required are very important to start with.

.

Starts with choosing the right brush.

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT BRUSH FOR YOURSELF :

The AMERICAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION  Recommends brushing teeth twice a day for maximum of two minutes time using a fluoride toothpaste. The toothbrush used preferably needs to be a soft bristled one, both of which may reduce the risk of  gingival injury ,but at the same time it should be able to reach the crevices between the teeth and also the back and sides of the molars.

Brush size depends upon how comfortable each person feels to have it inside the oral cavity and the handle of the toothbrush should be long enough to hold it in the hand. Tooth brush with multi level bristles or angled bristles perform better than conventional flat trimmed bristles in removing the plaque.

There are three different types of tooth brushes as per the bristle type :  Soft, Medium and Hard. Although the medium bristled ones are shown effective in the bio film or plaque removal.

ADA strongly recommends the use of soft bristled brushes to minimise risk of gingival injury.

.

2. DENTAL FLOSS :

80% of the dental plaque is cleared by this method according to the ADA. There are two types of flosses: Waxed and Un waxed.

  • UN WAXED has a possibility that it may get stuck in between the inter dental areas of overhanging restorations causing  fracture.
  • WAXED is user friendly and can be effective in removing the plaque however small the inter dental space is. For the upper teeth grasp the floss between the thumb and index finger, for the lower both the index fingers. The length of the floss should be:-15-25 Cms.
  • Flossing is usually done in back and forth motions.

.

Tongue scrapers are a mandate in maintaining oral health

3. TONGUE SCRAPERS : Tongue scrapers remove the debris built up on the tongue. These should be used after brushing.Wash the scraper before use. It must be brought from backside of the tongue forward. Make sure to clean all the surfaces of the tongue. Then rinse and clean it and rinse the mouth.

.

This category must be avoided if you wants your teeth to be pearly white

4.FOODS TO BE AVOIDED :

SUGARY foods and junk stuff which contain high levels of carbohydrates and glucose. like Coke, Pepsi, other high sugary, juices, potato chips, toffees etc.

As the starch gets converted into glucose by salivary amylase. The very frequent consumption of sucrose leads to  exposing of the teeth to a lower PH  which in turn causes demineralization  of the teeth.

Streptococcus mutans bacteria thrive on these sugars converting them into a bio film called plaque.

ALCOHOL too can make the mouth dry causing staining of teeth.

.

You must visit a Dentist 2ce/ year for a good dental hygiene

5. VISIT DENTIST REGULARLY

DENTIST visit hence becomes important twice a year at least .

Think twice before you cancel your appointment with the dentist. The below said factors also need to be considered :

a) Periodontal disease : Poor oral hygiene in turn leads to the development of plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth causing irreparable damage to the jawbone and support structures. You may even suffer tooth loss.

b) Dental fillings: Dental fillings in general have an expectancy of 8-10 years though some even last longer. Once your filling ruptures the food particles get underneath it causing a breeding ground for bacteria. This in turn may necessitate a root canal as it affects the nerve of the tooth close to the filling.

c) Hormone changes in females : During Puberty, menstruation and pregnancy there are certain changes in the level of hormones in the body  due to which there are increase in cavities and plaque formation. Brushing and flossing regularly is important.

d) Tempero mandibular disorders : Due to grinding of teeth or extraction of molars causing change in bite there may be joint pain and locking of joints for which Dental implants are advisable. Dentists also advise bite guard appliance for grinding of teeth during night hours of sleep.
